Description
An extremely rare 4 inch 78rpm picture record by the Talking Book Corporation entitled “The Mocking Bird” and dated 1918.
The Talking Book Corporation was set up by the chief recording engineer of the Columbia Phonograph Company (later Columbia Records) Victor Hugo Emerson at 358 Fifth Avenue, New York City (later, One W. 34th St. NYC). This is one of a series of twelve picture disks made by the company between 1918 and 1919 and one of the earliest examples of records for children.
Please examine the pictures to assess condition; The 4" shellac disk is mounted on 1/16” thick cardboard and is in very good condition for its age – and considering that it was designed for children's use – with just a few light scratches across the surface. The card has a 1/2” section missing at the bottom left (on the end of the branch) and has some loss of printing on the beak. There is a crease across the bird’s neck and beak, and a certain amount of rubbing around the edges of the board.
The item measures 10” from the top of the beak to the base. I’ve never played the record, despite 30 years among my collection, so can't vouch for its sound quality or content. A scarce and highly collectible item.
The disk will be securely packed between two pieces of hardboard and despatched via Royal Mail Tracked.
