Artist: Dock Boggs
Released: 1927
Titles and Condition:
Side A: Pretty Polly, E+ Side B: Danville Girl, E+
Description:  Offered in a crisp, original Brunswick sleeve
Perfect mirror-like finish, barely played, from Seattle physician’s 1940’s record collection. Original Brunswick 1927 recording of Moran Lee “Dock” Boggs, one of only 12 sides captured on shellac between 1927 -29.
Recent music critic retrospective description: “The death-obsessed singer's recordings, driven by his frenetically paced and often dissonant but always coldly controlled banjo playing, are some of the most powerful in American folk music.There’s something unmatchably intense and unsettling about many of these early recordings, most especially "Pretty Polly," a murder ballad sung in Boggs' rail-thin voice, harsh, emotionless and chilling.”
D-modal banjo tuning drives it home, eery like a mountain ghost.
Plays two fine country blues banjo tracks loud and clear, with almost zero surface noise. Close to Near Mint condition, even the label and center hole are unblemished and show no signs of play. One cannot find a better quality example of this original recording, short of documented NOS.
Grading is VJM (Vintage Jazz Market, based on visual and play grading, using a Shure cartridge with 78 stylus.
N or N- = Unplayed, like new (category not used to avoid making unprovable claims)
E+ = A perfect copy with only minor signs of previous playing
E = Shiny! Minimal, slight signs of wear, such as small sleeve scuffs or a light scratch.
E- = Still shiny, minor groove wear, light scratches. Plays well, and an above average copy.
V+ = Average, even wear. Duller finish with scuffs and scratches, still plays well.
V = Moderate wear, playable, with surface noise and scratches audible.
V- = Playable, but with distortion in loud passages, surface noise & scratches intrusive.
G+ = Plays through.
G = Looks OK at a distance.
P = Resembles a record.
