78 rpm- Billie Holiday. a nice selection of Billie Holiday records on various labels, from various periods in her career. Billie was the premiere song stylist of the jazz/ swing era in the 1930s-40s-50s. She recorded under her own name and with bands as varied as Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Paul Whiteman, Count Basie, Teddy Wilson, etc. She set the style for jazz singing- an influence still felt today, and was influenced herself by the great Louis Armstrong

NOTES: Billie sings her classic Strange Fruit. The song that was too controversial for her home label to record, so she went to independent Commodore and made this gem. Content about black people getting lynched in the South still poignant today!
