Description
"Narcissus Played By Sousa's Band" is the title engraved in formal letters, but hand-scribed and running into the hole it says "Arthur Pryor." Berliner Gramophone Record No. 0220 with "A" below that. The last printed patent date is Oct. 29, 1895; hand scribed is 6/10/ and what looks like a 9.
Please click here to see a large scan. Condition appears excellent with no deep scratches or major damage; there are a couple of small short pits about a groove wide and a millimeter long. I am not able to play it. The pictures are slightly grey because I attempted to increase the light and contrast so you could see details, but the record itself is glossy black. A little bit of on-line research reveals that Sousa hated recordings and would not conduct his band in any, and that Arthur Pryor did conduct some recordings of the band (Wikipedia on Sousa). Also, that Berliner released some 50 recordings of Pryor as soloist on trombone between 1897 and 1900, very few of which survive (http://www.wgpark.com/page.asp?pid=23). So I don't know if this recording could possibly contain Pryor on trombone with the band, or if he was merely conducting it.
Amendment and addendum to the above -- Sousa apparently capitulated on conducting while recording, possibly in the 1920s.
Also, the Pryor article cited says that Pryor conducted the band for Berliner while Sousa was ill in 1898 and this may have led to his conducting for the Berliner recordings on 4/22/99, 6/6 and 6/7/99, and in April 1900. This recording was apparently made on 6/10/99, a date not mentioned in the article, so was unknown to at least that author and might be scarce.
