Description
The original LP mastering, etched with 10/29/63 on the run-out groove, of an album that's influenced dozens of artists and interpretations since it was released.
The Ronettes (featuring the late Ronnie Spector, may she rest in beauty), Darlene Love, The Crystals, and Bobb B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, all under the direction of Phil Spector, whose vision it was to take these classic Christmas songs and make fun "symphonies for the kids" with never-before-heard approaches to the rhythmic structure, and amazing musicians creating the most classic examples of Spector's "wall of sound."
Among the musicians playing behind the wonderful vocalists are Leon Russell, Sonny Bono, Jack Nitzsche, and Hal Blaine. These guys, archetypal professionals even before some of them had solo careers, played on dozens of artists' records after Spector brought them together in the early 60's. Collectively they are sometimes known as "The Wrecking Crew," and a documentary by that name is out there streaming and it's a revelation about this remarkable unsung group.
Anyway, here they are, together with the brightest and sweetest women voices in R&B, in mono sound as Spector intended all his music to be heard, on his own record label, with him in charge of every detail including this LP master created in the last weeks of the JFK era. You've probably heard some of these renditions since they still get airplay (every Christmas for the last 60 years!) but you may never have heard or thought of owning the original album, with great lesser-known tracks and a cumulative effect of pure joy.
