Description
ABDO
Salma (1972)
EMI / ODEON 2C064-34786
from soulstrut.com:
Abdelrahman “Abdo” Elkhatib, was an Egyptian musician who relocated to Sweden to go to school and ended up staying as a teacher.
One of his famous students was Bjorn Jason Lindh, who performs on this LP.
The song to check is Ah Ya Zen that starts off like a traditional Arabic song with just Abdo’s singing and playing on a lute.
That goes on for almost 10 minutes, but then in the middle it totally switches up to a funky little Soul-Jazz number
fueled by the organ and electric piano playing of a group called the Solar Plexus.
Then the band gets down to mixing the two styles for the last bit of the song. That’s worth the price of admission right there.
The rest of the songs are a mix of traditional Arabic sounds and Choir music.
