A definitive classic of 90s second wave black metal, Nachthymnen (From The Twilight Kingdom) marked the second full-length from Austria's melodic experimentalists Abigor. Originally released in 1995, the project celebrates its 30th anniversary with this long-awaited reissue that finally restores the original CD version tracklist sequence after the often-maligned Chaos Sacrum 2008 press reshuffled and omitted certain tracks whilst being limited to a boutique number of copies. Widely available on vinyl for the first time in its intended form, the pressing comes with a bonus CD comprised of instrumental demo-rehearsals including early alternative versions captured between 1994/95, as well as an extensive 32-page booklet and poster. Written and recorded when the three members were all between the ages of 18-20, their youthful edginess in worshipping all things Satanic or Lord Of The Rings inspired, is offset by the remarkably dense and dexterous musicianship on display, with overwhelmingly technical and harrowing brutality shrouded in avant-garde passages of melancholic despair so serene, they would unintentionally lay the early groundwork for the subgenres of DSBM (Depressive Suicidal Black Metal) and blackgaze. More unnerving is the looming presence of founding guitarist/bassist Peter Kubik, who took his own life towards the end of 2024, whilst the two remaining members released the macabre tribute - "immortal in his legacy - blood (family), soil (home) and monuments of Black Metal art. walked through the gate by his own hand, through his own will."
