Neo-soul is most usually associated with the likes of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, though both distance themselves from the term. In his case, Mark Adams' album explores quick, busy, jazzy-tinged grooves. Drawn from deep roots and years of being associated with playing with Roy Ayers, Adams brings that class into focus here while threading jazz, gospel and soul into a live recording built over several years. Interpretations of 'Sweet Tears' and 'Vibrations' sit comfortably alongside a rework of 'Expansions', originally by Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes. With a large ensemble in play, the record leans on tight musicianship and steady arrangements and results in a rich, cosmic listen.
