??

The East African Thum lyre (or Thumra) is a nilotic 8-string instrument with turtoise shell resonnator.

The label specifies the vocal rendition by Elisha Nyakango as 'religious chant', but unless you speak Luo,

you could just as well take it as a topical or comic song, or a ballad in a societal context.

The Luo are a nilotic tribe which lives around Lake Victoria, mainly in Kenya and Sudan. From their previous

sudanese (nilotic) homestead they brought with them the use of the thum lyre which is of ancient Greek,

and later Egyptian, origin.
