the following info is from rounder records which has reissued this on CD>
East of the famous Mississippi Delta lie Tate and Panola, two counties that harbored a startlingly wide array of folk music unique to the African American experience. From the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Culture. this collection of field recordings, first committed to tape in 1942 by the renowned folklorist Alan Lomax, and followed up from 1969 to 1971 by musicologist David Evans. They chronicle early blues such as "Shake 'Em on Down," which appears in two distinct versions. But what's really incredible about this album are the other, odder, and quite rare vocal and instrumental performances. In the first version of the song, Compton Jones sings and plays a "bow diddley" -- essentially, a tensile wire played with a slide. Later, Jones is joined by his family for a raggedly rhythmic fife and drum version of "Old Dick Jones Is Dead and Gone." Rhythm is paramount throughout these recordings; wicker chairs, solitary drums, and empty metal bathtubs all serve as accompaniment at some point. Ada Turner even accompanies her own laundry churning with an a capella version of "This Little Light of Mine." This is not a recording made for the casual fan; it's a audio document, a musical textbook that is, as the liners state, "a must album for a broader understanding of African American musical traditions."  includes booklet of historical essays, evocative photography, and detailed liner and recording notes. ~ Johnny Loftus
