 Soaked with sounds that wouldn't become fashionable in jazz for nearly another decade, this is a very interesting statement by an overlooked musician. Leading the band on oud as well as bass, Abdul-Malikbravely takes the music back toward its African origins. The results are a fascinating listen, especially on tunes like "African Bossa Nova," a combination of Brazilian and African rhythms that sounds like great chamber funk. Historians will dig an early appearance by Andrew Cyrille as well as the bright and shining trumpet of Tommy Turrentine in a rare setting outside his brother's band. For those looking for something new, or perhaps in search of a missing musical link, this disc will reward repeated listens.
