One of the very best Reel-to-Reel units Japanese AKAI ever made, excellent professional analog sound quality, difficult to find in near mint condition like this and still very much in demand. All meters and lights work perfectly. Full auto reverse! Records and plays both directions. Fast forward and rewind work nicely. Direct Drive - no belts. Very low hours on the Glass Ferrite Heads - they don't wear out like stainless steel or aluminum. This unit produces high quality recordings at 3 1/4 and 7 1/2 ips. It plays reels 7 1/2 inches and 10 inches - Large or small reels - 1/4" tape capacity.
The GX-635D is one of the open reel models offered by Akai. The total weight of the system is 46 pounds (21 kg). The deck is 17-3/8 wide, 19 tall, and 10 front to back (including the feet). The maximum size of the magnetic audio tape (reel) that is used measures 10-1/2 inches. After the supply reel is mounted on the spindle, the maximum recording capacity using 3,600 feet of recording tape is 12 hours monaural recording at 3-3/4 ips and 6 hours stereo recording at 3-3/4 ips. If a 1,200 foot tape is used then the rewind or forward time taken is around 75 seconds. The tape speed is 3-3/4 ips or 7-1/2 ips. The wow and the flutter are less than 0.07% rms at 7-1/2 ips.
The recording system installed in the GX-635D is 4-track, 2-channel stereo or monaural recording & playback, whereas the recording level indicator installed is VU meter x 2. The signal to noise ratio of Akai GX-635D is better than 65db. The frequency response is 30 to 27,000 cps ??3 db at 7-1/2 ips and 30 to 20,000 cps ? 3db at 3-3/4 ips. Other features: auto reverse, Dolby Noise Reduction, 2 mike inputs, mixing capabilities, recording on a timer switch, pitch control, 2 sets of feet – bottom vertical and on back to be laid down flat table top style.
I am the 2nd owner and have not used the deck...has been stored for many years in a non-smoking environment. Overall very, very low hours of usage since the deck was new. This model still sells for as much as $1,800 US. Also included orignal box, Operator’s Manual, 1 Hub and several tape reels are included.
