ALAN BOWN Stretching Out (Island ILPS 9163) RARE UK 1st Pressing EX++
RARE UK first pressing of (The) Alan Bown`s last album "Stretching Out" on Island Records (August 1971).
"Stretching Out was the band's fourth (and final) album, released in 1971. This album (like the previous Listen) features Gordon Neville on vocals and finds the band's sound even harder and jazzier. The band's sound had changed in part from the playing of the new bass player Andy Brown - listen to "The Messenger", and you'll hear the band stretching out for a better, more progressive sound. (...) The band's sound is beefier than previous albums, in part because of Tony Catchpole's guitar - his solos and fills give the band a harder edge. And combined with the horns and keyboards, the band flexed new muscle. Bown was keen to go into a more progressive sound, incorporating longer solos - which not all the band were happy with. But after so many years of live gigs for little money, and releasing albums to little acclaim, they called it quits. But they went out with a strong album, full of (then) contemporary jazz-rock. GRADING:
EX+ COVER. Original unlaminated gatefold sleeve in overall fine condition. Please see photos for details.
- Two small tears (at bottom left) from unsuccessful sticker removal.
- Very minor scuffing to bottom corners only.
- Slightest beginnings of ring wear to back cover (at top and left).
MINT- RECORD, carefully played a handful of times at most.
- Near-perfect vinyl on both sides, with impeccable audio reproduction throughout.
- Near-inaudible background crackle in between some tracks.
- A few lightest hairlines from sleeve removal and visible under bright light only.
- First-pressing pink-rimmed Island Records labels with no visible spindle wear at all.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read "ILPS 9163 A - 1U" and "ILPS 9163 B - 1U".
- Mothers/Stampers: "1 / P" on Side One and "1 / 0" on Side Two.
- This record is certified to be a UK first pressing of "Stretching Out", released in August 1971.
