ALBERT AYLER– New Grass (1969) Impulse-9175 – M-/EX (cover/vinyl)

A departure for the esoteric free jazz tenor, this finds him more in a soul-jazz format backed by funky drumming by Barnard Purdie and joined by Seldon Powell, Carl Cobbs on electric keys and Bill Folwell on electric bass. Tracks include “Heart Love,” “New Generation,” “New Ghosts” and “Sun Watcher.” While his fans at the time may not have liked this, it is one of his better albums in my opinion. A very cool set of music that harkens more to his R&B origins than the reputation he established as a free jazz icon.

This is a beautiful copy. The laminated gatefold cover is beautiful with a promo sticker on the front. The original red and black label pressing vinyl is super clean and glossy with only faint sleeve scuffs that are purely superficial. Nice! I grade this conservatively: M-/EX (cover/vinyl).
