Description

I bought this album new in 1973 from an import shop in Melbourne. It was sealed and there was a deletion hole punched through the cover in the top right hand corner between the "A" and the "N" in the word "COLTRANE" on the front cover. (In the US deletion holes or cut corners were put in the covers of unsold records returned to the manufacturer by the retailers. These records were then resold to other sales outlets for sale at a discounted price. Many of these records found their way as  imports to Australia at that time.) I taped it and it has only been played a few times since then. The original recording was issued in 1968, this is a later pressing most likely from 1972. The Impulse label design on this album is the fifth Impulse design dating from 1972 according to the CVINYL.COM website which gives record company label variations for most US, UK and some Australian record companies. This is the first solo album from Alice Coltrane and was intended as a tribute to her late husband John Coltrane who had died the year before(1967). With the exception of the first track on side one "Ohnedaruth", which has Ben Riley on drums and Pharoah Sanders on bass clarinet, the line up consists of Alice Coltrane on piano(side one) and concert harp (side two). Rashied Ali on drums and Jimmy Garrison on bass. The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny, with only a few minor scuffs from being taken in and out of the cover. Both sides play loud and clear, there is some low level surface noise on the run in tracks and between the tracks, not noticeable while the music is playing. Both labels are clean no writing or stickers, I have graded the vinyl as VG. The cover is a glossy gate fold, the front and back covers still have a high gloss, with some light wear noticeable if held at an angle to the light. The inside of the gate fold cover has a dull sheen both sides are clean,no writing or stains. One side has an interview with Alice Coltrane by writer Pauline Rivelli and the other side has a review by LeRoi Jones. Overall the cover is in great condition, still rigid and the spine is intact and can be easily read in the shelf, but I have graded it as VG- because of the deletion hole (Interesting to note the title for track 3 on side two is spelled as "Atmic Peace" on the back and inside of the cover and is shown as "Atomic Peace" on the label.)
