Description

ALLEE WILLIS -- Mr. Sad Affair --  this is a rare, one-sided 10" publisher's demo acetate, 45 rpm, circa mid-to-late 1970's, written by the acclaimed soul - R&B - pop performer and songwriter Allee Willis who recorded under her own name in the early 1970's but is best-known for writing monster hits including "Boogie Wonderland" and "September" for Earth Wind & Fire; "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" for The Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield; the theme to the "Friends" TV show; co-writing "The Color Purple" Broadway musical, and many others.   It's not clear who the lead singer is, and even whether it's a male or female vocalist (it may be a male singing Smokey Robinson-style falsetto); it may be Willis herself performing w/ back-up singers, or another (uncredited) Soul-R&B style singer.  This is a songwriter's demo acetate, recorded for and distributed by Almo Music/Irving Music, Willis' song publisher, and was intended to interest other artists in performing the song.  (Almo and Irving were publishing houses started by Herb Alpert & Jerry Moss of A&M Records fame; "Almo" is formed from the first two letters of their last names.)  This song was co-written by Willis and David Lasley circa 1978; it's an excellent, upbeat 1970's Soul-R&B song and was discovered as part of a long-forgotten cache of demo acetate 10" records by Willis and other songwriters on the Almo/Irving roster (please see my Ebay listings for other rare acetates.)   I can't find any information on cover versions of this song by other artists so this may be the only version it exists on, as a demo acetate, making it extremely desirable for fans of 1970's Soul and R&B.  Included is a xeroxed lyric sheet for the song credited to Willis and Lasley.  In generic Almo/Irving Music sleeve.  Record condition:  VG++, light surface wear.  To hear a short sound clip, click on the link below.
