The legendary Ginette Neveu's 1940s recording of the Sibelius Concerto

Tragedy struck Ms Neveu, killed along with her brother
Jean, in a plane crash, in late 1949 in early middle age.
She made very few recordings, largely due to the Second World War starting just as her fame was beginning to spread, but was signed to EMI by Walter Legge, though he makes only passing reference to her in On And Off The Record, his wife’s Elizabeth Schwarzkopf'smemoir.
Accompanied here by Susskind and the Philharmonia, she is intense to the point of incandescence, while still displaying total mastery of technique.It's said her concentration was so fierce that, at the end of the recording, she had blood streaming from cuts to her neck caused by her Strad being forced into her neck and chin.
In the Four Pieces, by Suk, with her brother (also lost in the crash) at the piano, shedisplays another side to her art, combining to convey nuance perfectly . There is no doubt that, had she lived, she would have been rated one of the dozen greatest players of the century across a full career.
This LP, issued probably in the early 1950s, is in wonderful condition and has hardly been played. I rate it NM- but a little judicious cleaning could improve that further.
There is a tiny tear in the reverse of the flip side (1cm) shown in the photo. The shadow is just my dark sweater - not a mark. The laminate is complete on this side of the sleeve and missing on part of the front side, though what remains (60 per cent) is not lifting or flaking. That makes the sleeve overall EX.
Quite honestly, I doubt if there aremany finer examples of this 50+ year old LP out there. Good luck with your bidding which starts as always at a low price with no reserve.
