AMERICAN GYPSY
1975 CHESS LP
Who are these guys. ‘Inside Out is a ‘lost’ classic that’s thankfully found. A super funky bass riff and vocals with the strings and orchestration similar to Vol. 1 in this series. This track will literally turn you inside out with joy. 70s funky soul with bits you’ll recognize.
They went thru the usual changing names, changing members, and when they were frustrated by not making it big, they called it quits in the USA, and headed to Holland. It was 1973 and they worked up some new material, landing themselves in a studio and recording their first Lp called ‘Angel Eyes’ for Philips Records.
Released in the US under the title ‘American Gypsy’ the Lp started picking up some FM airplay in February of 1975. You’ll hear a lot of different styles here, with funk, disco, and smooth soul. The killer cuts to pay attention to are the brilliant (and heavily sampled) "Inside Out", the fabulously funky "While It's Cold Outside" (which is a real floor filler). I should also point you to instrumental "Tribute To American Gypsy" which closes the Lp (check out the organ solo at about a minute in).
