Description
Finally parting with my copy of this extremely rare album with the early Andy Warhol artwork. I have owned this copy for many years, it belonged to my mother who was, possibly, the original owner. It is a promo copy. I would grade the album as VG-/VG- with a bit of explaining. This is a solid play copy, it looks semi-scratched but it plays better than it looks. I just listened to it to confirm the grade. On my vintage turntable with new stylus it has no skips, there are plenty of clicks and pops and general noises that go with a record in this condition but it does not have the pervasive hiss that severely abused records do. The music is bright and loud and, in my subjective opinion, completely listenable. The cover has splits on both the top and bottom, otherwise it is pretty good. The front has very minor ringwear but the color is still very bright, it would look great framed, if you were so inclined. The back has some minor wear and a promo stamp. The spine has a minor chip but is otherwise fine with no splitting. I will make a few audio clips over the weekend so that it can be evaluated. This link is not active but it will be by Friday. Featuring: Conte Candoli, Nick Travis, Don Stratton, Bernie Glow, Phil Sunkel, Al de Risi, Dick Sherman (tp), Elliot Lawrence (p), Burgher Jones (b), Sol Gubin (d)This rare and longtime hard-to-find album was conceived to show how enjoyable cool trumpets can sound. Featured "Cool Gabriels" are Conte Candoli, Nick Travis, Don Stratton, Bernie Glow, Phil Sunkel, Al de Risi and Dick Sherman. The tune contained in this album were selected specifically to give each "Gabriel" a chance to show his stuff and also to demonstrate the various moods that could be brilliantly exemplified wit a trumpet ensemble. The fun that the musicians had making these recordings is apparent on every selection, including the Gerry Mulligan tunes, the clever Al Cohn items 'Cupcake' and 'Spooky', John Benson Brooks' devilish 'Nick', Paul Selden's somber 'Something Blue', and Elliot Lawrence's light compositions.

Here is the audio link. I played a bit of the beginning of each song recorded with an ambient room mike. I am sure this method makes it sound worse than it is because it is picking up other noises. Using traditional record grading methods, the record is clearly better than a G and worse than VG so I am calling it VG-. I am not really interested in debating the point, if you have bid on the record already and the soundclip is less than you expected I have no objection to you cancelling your bid. If you are seeking a mint copy please do not bid on this record. I would not normally be so angst-ridden on the subject but the unusual amount of interest in this album, combined with the rarity, leads me to take extra precautions to ensure everybody is happy.
