ANITA O'DAY CAL TJADER Time For Two 1962 Verve 1st Press Mono DG V-8472 Peel Me a Grape
Recorded in Hollywood over three days in February 1962, Time For Two pairs Anita O'Day with Cal Tjader's quartet in one of the most relaxed and swinging collaborations of her Verve years.
O'Day brings her signature horn-like phrasing and dry wit to a program that moves between straight-ahead jazz and lightly seasoned Latin grooves — Tjader's vibraphone sitting back and letting her lead without ever disappearing. The result is intimate and assured.
Highlights include the slyly seductive "Peel Me a Grape" — Dave Frishberg's original recording with O'Day is the one that set the standard — alongside "An Occasional Man," "The Party's Over," and a lovely take on "Thanks for the Memory." Johnny Rae on drums, Bob Corwin and Lonnie Hewitt sharing piano duties, Freddy Schreiber on bass.
This is an original U.S. first pressing on Verve Records, mono, V-8472. Black label with the large silver MGM-era "T" graphic — correct for the original 1962 issue. Distributed by MGM.
The lacquer carries an RE-1 designation on both sides — a first recut lacquer from the original 1962 pressing run. This is a first pressing RE-1 lacquer cut during that initial release period. Deep groove present both sides.
Produced by Creed Taylor — the architect of Verve's sound in this era, responsible for some of the most beautifully recorded jazz of the early 1960s. Engineered by Al Schmitt, one of the most decorated recording engineers in the history of American music, whose work on Verve sessions from this period remains a benchmark for acoustic jazz recording.
