ACCORDING TO THE INDIVIDUAL WE ACQUIRED THIS ITEM FROM, THIS LP ALBUM COMES FROM THE ESTATE OF A WELL-KNOWN DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE REVIEWER (THE SELLER WOULD NOT REVEAL HIS IDENTITY).  WHILE WE WERE UNABLE TO EXTRACT THE NAME OF THE REVIEWER IN QUESTION,  WE ARE CONVINCED THAT THE PERSON IS NONE OTHER THAN THE LEGENDARY JAZZ GURU ►NAT HENTOFF, BEING THAT THE ITEM WAS ACQUIRED WITHIN WEEKS FROM HIS PASSING (JANUARY 2017) AND MOST LIKELY AS A RESULT OF HIS ESTATE LIQUIDATION. WHAT IS REMARKABLE ABOUT THIS AND OTHER ITEMS COMING FROM THE SAME SOURCE (WHICH ARE ALL PROMOTIONAL ITEMS OR REVIEWER COPIES) - IS INCREDIBLE STATE OF PRESERVATION. Anita O'Day and Billy May had met before, on a glorious 1959 date swinging Cole Porter, before they reconvened just 14 months later to do similar damage to the songbook of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. While Porter songs such as "Just One of Those Things" and "I Get a Kick out of You" translated well to the high-energy treatment of May's brassy arrangements and O'Day's spitfire performances, Rodgers & Hart were a more difficult proposition. Broadway fans could understandably fear that O'Day and May would pulverize the waltzing balladry of Rodgers as well as Hart's intricate wordplay. They should have realized that, like the breakneck yet technically perfect performances of bop originators Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, O'Day would miss no subtleties -- and would probably add some of her own -- while she graced these energized versions of American pop classics. Anita O'Day and Billy May Swing Rodgers and Hart begins on a high note, with the absolutely frenetic "Johnny One Note," and finds May unsurprisingly goosing several of Richard Rodgers' wonderful waltzes, including a version of "Lover" that provides the excited American equivalent of Peggy Lee's bustling, exotic hit version of the same song. Despite her technical gifts, Anita O'Day still sings a ballad very sweetly, as on "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," although she predictably can't help scatting out the song. She also delivers just the perfect amount of man-killer tartness on the obscure serial-killer tale "To Keep My Love Alive."

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

[On a passing note: yours truly passes by Lorenz Hart's grave at the Mount Zion cemetery in Maspeth, Queens about twice a month.  I never fail to hum him the opening chords of "Blue Moon" as I stroll by; have a Hart, Y'all!]

·       THE RECORD

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a minor annotation written next to the track listing (less than 1/2 square inch in size, total)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
