Originally released in 1987, Among The Living served as the third full-length from New York thrash metal legends Anthrax, and is commonly cited as the work that finally catapulted the band to arena-sized venues as well as cementing their place in the "Big Four" of thrash (along with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer). Dedicated to the memory of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, who tragically lost his life whilst on tour with Anthrax supporting, the turmoil and anguish from the shocking loss fuelled much of the aggressive edge showcased across the work, elevating all of the strengths from its 1985 predecessor Spreading The Disease. An increase in frenetic double bass and drum-work from Charlie Benante, a more visceral hardcore edge in the riffs and gang vocals courtesy of guitarist/lyricist Scott Ian and the most aggressive vocal delivery from Joey Belladonna (known more for his high-pitched hard rock cadence) coalesced to create a record that sits high atop a myriad of metal and thrash all time lists from the likes of Revolver, Kerrang and VH1, whilst even being included in the 2006 book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
