APHRODITE'S CHILD - END OF THE WORLD - PSYCH - NEW/SEALED LIMITED EDITION
End Of The World Don't Try To Catch A River Mister Thomas Rain And Tears The Grass Is No Green Valley Of Sadness You Always Stand In My Way The Shepherd And The Moon Day Of The Fool
Of the three Aphrodite's Child albums, people usually know 666, which may have something to do with the fact that very whimsical progressive rock is more appreciated (in itself) than slightly whimsical psychedelic pop. However, in my opinion End of the World is much better than 666. There is a certain depth about the latter, but the former just contains so much better songs that the quality order is evident.
The opening title track has never been one of my favourite Aphrodite's Child songs, but still it is quite impressive. "Don't Try to Catch the River" is more rocking, with some Beatlesque notes and sounds put in. "Mister Thomas" is a bit like a show tune – once again, a wonderful musical snapshot of the late 1960s. The classic "Rain and Tears" follows. I like it, but it is not even close to the quality of the brilliant "Valley of Sadness" – one of the best songs that Aphrodite's Child ever delivered. "You Always Stand in My Way" surprises the listener as Demis Roussos yells like a true rock singer. "The Shepherd and the Moon" is also impressive, and while the two lengthy numbers feel less essential as 'tunes', they can't be considered bad or even mediocre.
Overall, End of the World is a very good album. I am surprised, though I knew that Vangelis Papathanassiou was a great songwriter from the start. Actually, I am not so much into Vangelis's later works, so in my opinion this is where he and Demis can be found at their best.
