Officially formed towards the end of 2018, Kekht Arakh is the singular project of black metal romanticist Dmitry Marchenko. Performing under the moniker of The Crying Orc (both a reference to Lord Of The Rings and controversial scene figure Burzum), the Ukraine born songwriter has been somewhat of an oddity in the underground since the release of his 2019 debut LP Night & Love, while the acclaim garnered by the 2021 sophomore follow-up Pale Swordsman was impossible to ignore. Known for his sonic homages to the raw, lo-fi production of old, the unlikely juxtaposition with emotive, melancholic lyricism has seen many a webpage lump the project into the "Depressive Black Metal" category, yet the material feels more evocative of classic genre tropes, utilising blast-beats, tremolo-picked guitars and cavernous howls, all offset by a permeating sense of melancholia. Returning with his most realised vision to date, the third full-length Morning Star further provokes the comfort zones of metal purists with a standout feature from Drain Gang cloud-trap icon and Yung Lean affiliate Bladee on the haunting 'Eternal Martyr' which repurposes emo-rap vocals into haunting neofolk balladry. In short, this is authentic black metal appealing to newcomers far beyond the casual reach of the extreme metal underground.
