Some words on this issue: ARBETE OCH FRITID: “S/T” (Musiknatet Waxholm – MNW 39P) Released in 1973. Swedish avant-rock arcane renowned from the inclusion of their name in the eponymous Nurse With Wound list. The group had links to International Harvester and Trad Gras Och Stenar. The band’s mainstay Ove Karlsson was inspired by the tape and drone experiments of Terry Riley. Unlike their compatriots Trad Gras Och Stenar, Arbete och Fritid cleaved deep into Nordic culture and recorded infrequently. By reworking folk melodies, already steeped in the rich overtones of keyed fiddles, bird-like flutes and thrumming drums, to drone-minded arrangements of horns and electrified instruments, Arbete och Fritid made the ancient music of Sweden much more accesable for the hip ears of the 1960’s dope smoking communal troupe. By revitalizing versions of such tunes as “The European Way” and “Halling efter Ulrik Jensestuen, Valdres”, a Gaelic-sounding feel gets jacked up with a Steve Reich and John Cale aesthetic, parallel with what Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span were doing concurrently for the music of the British Isles. A Bulgarian melody gets soaked into a kind of Para Dieswats Duul acid-folk treatment with flutes and bells resulting in the hypnotic “Dagen Lider”. A large part of Arbete och Fritid’s originals are short and, oddly enough, more conventionally traditional-sounding. But the acid induced tribal freak out stomp of “Petrokemi det kan man inte bada I”, beefed up with vicious Ayler-esque sax lashes and animated vocals, brings Trad Gras and Parson Sound to mind. In all a stellar album, that seems to have fallen of the face of the earth recently. Great condition, only some light scuffs.
