This is one of her most-overlooked '60s albums, on which she presented some of her jazziest material, despite the title. None of these cuts were significant hits, and none were Aretha originals. But she displayed her characteristically-eclectic taste in choice material, picking compositions by Percy Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson and, at the most pop-oriented end of her spectrum, John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind" and Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly." Her vocals are consistently passionate and first-rate, as is the musicianship.

Originally released in 1967, this is Aretha Franklin's first album for Atlantic and possibly the greatest debut in the history of soul music. This soul landmark contains one of the truly seminal singles ever in "Respect." 2 killer tracks recorded at Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals "Never Loved A Man the Way I Love You" and "Do Right Woman-Do Right Man" puts lots of other great hard soul groovers. A masterpiece from start to finish!

"Franklin's Atlantic debut is the place where gospel music collided with R&B and rock & roll and became soul. The Detroit-born preacher's daughter was about $80,000 in debt to her previous label, Columbia, when Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler signed her in 1966. "I took her to church," Wexler said, "sat her down at the piano and let her be herself." She immediately cut the album's title hit, a slow fire of ferocious sexuality, while her storefront-church cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" — Franklin's first Number One pop single — became the marching song for the women's and civil-rights movements." - .rollingstone

Live recordings come up with extremely different results: most of them land in the rubbish bin, some of them are available as bootleg copies when a star's career has ended and are passed on conspiratorially from one excited collector to another. Only a very few conserve real spirit and sheer enthusiasm, which no arranger or sound mixer can conjure up in the studio. But even more sensational was Aretha Franklin's guest appearance at the Fillmore West, the legendary concert hall in San Francisco, which closed down shortly afterwards. Everyone knew who was going to perform, and yet everything was quite different on these three nights in the spring of 1971: her usual show band was left behind in Detroit and she appeared with King Curtis and The Kingpins - one of the most impressive bands around - accompanied by the trailblazers Cornel Dupree, and Bernard Purdie. The Memphis Horns, a fantastic horn section, blast away in the background, their keen as a razor backing rising up to soaring heights. From Billy Preston's fingertips on the organ flows an aura of spiritual energy and Ray Charles, who by chance (but how fortuitous) was among the audience also got his appearance in the telling title "Spirit In the Dark". No words need be lost about the queen on the cover. For without the superb albums of the late Sixties, Aretha Franklin would never have become the USA's first sister of soul nor would she have appeared in the Fillmore West.
