History: After Nachtstucke, Asmus signed a contract with Sky Records in 1981 for four albums. Sky Records was then a big label for so-called
cosmic and electronic music. Tietchens' interest in those days was not entirely for that kind of music, but he found himself
experimenting with a small Moog synthesizer, composing 'pop music', or at least by his own defintion popmusic. Unlike the 'real' cosmic
music from those days, Asmus limited himself to composing songs that were no longer then four minutes, but in turned out most of them are
under three minutes. 'Biotop' was the first album to be released on Sky and has sixteen short, sketch like pieces of rhythms and tunes on
the keyboard. Despite the attempt to make popmusic, one can't say that Tietchens succeeded very well on 'Biotop'. The rhythms are
rather monotone, the tunes are not cheery or cheeky, but sounds like a space craft that is going to land on Planet X. That makes 'Biotop'
into an interesting album, because Tietchens fails to play popmusic, but he comes up with a nice mixture of electronic music that could do
well as a sci-fi movie soundtrack.
Review:
* Synthy kraut-pop with drum machines. electro lounge from a quarky alternate universe. a few ace numbers in here, charming like the little robot you found in the future under a heap of junk that miraculously still works.
* Asmus Tietchen's second album takes a big leap from Adventures In Sound + Nachtstücke. His debut was rather cold and atmospheric. This one is quirky and dominated by the Roland CompuRhythm drum machine. Some people could see a filiation between this side of Tietchens' work, and the naive electro-pop that briefly surfaced almost 20 years later (Felix Kubin, Reznicek). But the original still stands strong. Of course, synthesizer technology being what it is, the music has aged, but the artist's unpredictability has kept it fresh. You simply cannot tell where these short tunes (nothing over four minutes, most under three) will go, even if they appear to be simple, even simplistic. Tietchens displays a warped sense of melodism. His lines slip out of tune, notes bend out of control. Oddly, the drum machine is not aggravating, in fact it is given the perfect context to put its limits to good use. And the sugary-sweet appearance of the lighter tracks is offset by a few disturbing ambient explorations, namely "Miss Ann Trope," and the closing title track. Tietchens is accompanied by the "Zeitzeichenorchester," but strangely, its six members all have names that are anagrams of his own. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
