Now in his 80s, Mulatu Astatke continues to deepen the legacy he helped forge with this new full-length seeing the Ethiopian vibraphonist and composer reimagine some of his most iconic works with an expanded palette and renewed energy. Recorded between London and Addis Ababa, with his long-standing UK ensemble and musicians from his Jazz Village club, the album elegantly fuses the modal warmth of Ethio-jazz with the edge of big band arrangement. 'Kulun' is reborn as a sweeping, celebratory opener, while 'Netsanet' sways with tightened grooves and luminous brass interplay. 'Yekermo Sew' is no less hypnotic than the original, but now stretches further into improvisatory space, anchored by subtle polyrhythms and rich tonal colour from traditional instruments like the krar and washint. 'Motherland' and 'Chik Chikka' offer new material that blends seamlessly with the classics, steeped in Mulatu's unmistakable rhythmic code. Produced by Dexter Story and featuring contributions from Carlos NiNo and Kibrom Birhane, it's a generous, multi-generational project that frames Ethio-jazz not as heritage but as a living, vital force still finding new forms.
