Description
ATHANOR: “Read Me” b/w “Memory (Don’t Fail Me)” (Bananafish, 1975)
Third and final single by unknown, early 70s, Beatles-influenced psych pop duo from Chicago’s north-side; self-issued a year after their second single on the band’s own label which was now renamed Bananafish Records (some with picture sleeve – unfortunately not this one). Perhaps the band’s most Beatles-esque release – either song could be mistaken for Emitt Rhodes or even Badfinger! Melodic, folk-dried pop with definite West Coast leanings and poetic spirit, reminiscent of the best moments of Dialogue or the John Scoggins LP on Tiger Lily. Singer Greg Herriges’ ‘John Lennon’ here puts Lazy Smoke’s John Pallano all to shame. Athanor only put out three singles during the band’s lifespan; all of which I currently have up for auction.
