Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are around moderate, but quite fine and only really show with angled viewing. Rest assured, the record plays with very clean and impressive sound and I feel sure the spindle marks bare scant reflection on usage.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Rare: this album was only available for the briefest of time before being withdrawn from sale and deleted. It is by a considerable distance the rarest album by this highly respected and collectable prog-rock band.

Brief Info: The first Audience album that was withdrawn from sale and deleted fairly soon after issue. Thus this album is quite rare, very collectable and sort-after by fans and prog-rock collectors. Poor promotion and the band’s dissatisfaction with the final product are often blamed for this, and this album was a very long time out-of-print. Audience play a brand of mildly jazzy-rock and have become popular within this field, their following two albums are also quite sort-after but considerably easy to find than this one. This is a very fine copy: the quite fragile cover that is prone to all forms of wear is very clean and tidy with little real wear, but does have a couple of surface scuffs on the front that not too obtrusive. The record is very clean and plays superbly with little unwanted at all, despite having around moderate spindle marks. So a rare chance to own this elusive and considerably sort-after piece, only the second one I have ever had.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): mainly due to the couple of scuff marks on the front. An unlaminated, very matt single format cover with slightly ‘rustic’ and gently textured surfaces. Also made with quite soft, thin black card, so the inside of the storage area is as black as the outside. So the black is not ink, but the actual card coloured and printed on top e.g. the graphics and type matter. Inside is a large square piece of natural buff coloured card, not sure if this came with the record, but I will leave it inside anyway. Printed and made in England by Polydor.

Cover Front: A couple of fairly fine scuff marks that do show but are not too obtrusive. A small few other light surface marks/gentle scuffs show very little with normal viewing. Clean and quite fresh looking witih barely any creasing. Strong deep colour and the ghostly image of the band looks nice. Very gentle rim impression is near impossible to avoid, but lack of penetrating ring wear always a bonus on very dark unprotected covers.

Cover Back: The back is very impressive indeed and has very little to fault at all. Any marks this side are very faint and few indeed, again no ring wear or noteworthy creasing.

Top Edge: Thin and straight with the odd hint of a likely tip-in by the previous owner, this minimal.

Bottom Edge: Similar again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with very little wear at all. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and again quite thin, a little qutie mild compression likely. Most of the very fragile text is present with just a little rubbing to the end of the band name.

Corners: Any rip rubbing light with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Still a strong all-round example of this very fragile early 1970’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. Of the small number of these I have seen before, most have been in very poor conditions, often torn, badly creased or simply looking very aged and tatty. This still attractive item, even with the scuffs on the front, should please many collectors, but the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the Polydor inner is in very clean and impressive condition. It is date-coded 0270 (February 1970), I am not sure when this album was withdrawn, but I would imagine not long after. Both window circles are immaculate and the lining very fresh and clear. Barely any creasing and all edges solid, unsplit with no repairs. Any discolouration minimal and faint, this has aged little.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy I feel sure has been played considerably less than the spindle evidence may suggest. Spindle marks are only a very loose guide to this, many owner’ simply used the labels as a guide to locate spindle with hole and some steel spindles left marks more easily than others. So those who used this practice, could play a record once and leave 10 spindle marks, whereas those who were more careful, could play a record 10 times and leave no spindle marks. The playing areas have only fine and faint surface marks as seen under bright angled light and no penetrating scratches. Sound quality is very high also. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality and genuinely elusive prog-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this (obviously) very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. Again I remind, this album was withdrawn quite quickly and is a well-known difficult find. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – a rare opportunity for rock and prog collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
