When ‘Audience’ arrived on the rock scene in 1969 they had to create a whole new category of music so that they could be conveniently pigeonholed; their sound was thus labelled ‘Art Rock’.
The band’s influence over the years could never have been imagined at the time.
Their line-up defied the norm for a rock band, with a nylon strung acoustic guitar, saxophone, flute, and a more conservative back line of bass and drums, with Howard Werth’s unique vocals.
They played their first gig at the prestigious Marquee Club in Wardour Street, London after which they were immediately snapped up on a one album deal by the rather conservative Polydor Records.
The album Audience (1969) was a great critical success, but met with commercial indifference.
Polydor, unsure of how to treat the band, withdrew their support.
So when Tony Stratton Smith approached them with a view to joining Charisma Records they needed no second bidding.
He’d only just set up the label at that point and had only recorded a couple of things with Rare Bird and Van Der Graf Generator.
So Audience were attracted by the idea of joining Charisma, because in many ways they were the first of the independent labels.
Friend's, Friend's Friend was released in May 1970

Track Listing:
Side 1: NOTHING YOU DO / BELLADONNA MOONSHINE / IT BRINGS A TEAR / RAID
Side 2: RIGHT ON THEIR SIDE / EBONY VARIATIONS / PRIESTESS / FRIEND’S FRIEND’S FRIEND

LABELS: NEAR MINT
Clean and fresh with less than a handful (at most) of light spindle traces - this copy has seen very little play
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT++
Both surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen and are practically unmarked.
There are one or two light bush marks and a pin-point spot on Side Two but none of these have any audio consequence - the playback is superb
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT++
Sensational sound throughout - crystal clear, sharp and bright - and my one careful play-check at loud volume revealed no major audio issues of note - no scratches, no loud clicks or pops, no surface noise and no groove-wear (it's barely been played)
An exceptionally fine playing copy of this gorgeous LP - and these are surprisingly hard to find. I have seen/heard totally mint/unplayed copies of this first pressing which have played with excessive surface noise/clicking (especially on Side Two) - but this one sounds wonderful and probably surpasses its EX++ audio grading
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT+
Apart from a little storage rubbing to the edges of the gatefold it's in fine condition with strong, vibrant colours
