Brief Info: The second album by this impressive prog-rock band. Their first was briefly issued just to be withdrawn and deleted, that has become very sort after and collectable. Musically, this one blows it away and it is long overdue this four piece band got the recognition they deserve. Musically, they remind me of early Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig with elements of Van der Graaf Generator. With superb reed blowing from Gemmell, a top pressing is essential, and with Charisma, it’s never guaranteed regardless of looks. Slightly mixed news with this one: the pressing is superb and most-all plays with fantastic sound. BUT, the song ‘It Brings a Tear’ has a fairly small scratch that does sound for around 20 revs ranging from light to moderate. So NOT for the perfectionist or more discerning collector. As the rest does plays with barely anything else unwanted, I decided to offer it (with a very low starting bid, it could be a real bargain). Being such an early copy makes it quite a rare album – indeed, the original Polydor inner sleeve has the very first date-code of May 1970 on it – so they hardly get much earlier than this.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold with matt surfaces that includes the original B&C credits. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Superb and very colourful artwork but delicate and seldom without often heavy wear. This is very clean and fresh looking with minimal rubbing. It does have a well disguised price sticker removal mark with a few small and light surface marks and tip rubs, so not perfect, but still way better than most I have seen.

Cover Back: Most of any wear to the back is very gentle and light, most on the top right corner tip. The lack of ring wear is a considerable plus however and neither side has much creasing at all.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, with hardly anything of any note to fault.

Top Edges: Both practically unworn and still very straight.

Bottom Edges: Reasonably light patchy rubbing mainly to the front.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with very minimal traces of wear. Any thickening or burring small and very mild indeed. Record enters on the back edge and both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression modestly light. No text printed on this one and the graphic shows little wear up to the ends that have rubbed with the most at the top. The odd small chip or two but this is still strong and even the vulnerable folds have largely avoided wear which is more unusual.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with mostly fine shape retained with just the odd light tip crease.

Cover Summary: This is a well-known difficult cover and seldom seen without considerable wear. For looks, the main areas, including the spine, are attractive and show far less than most. As stated, the smallish sticker mark on the front has been cleverly ‘hidden’ ( NOT by myself ), and quite honestly, it shows little. So, like the record, NOT for the highly discerning, but it will never prove easy to find much better and should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): only marked down for one corner crease. That apart, it has little to fault and importantly, it has the 1/0570 (May 1970) date-code (as seen in close-up), the exactly month and year this album was issued in the UK. A polydor lined inner that is generally clean with two pristine window circles and ultra clear lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(++): not so easy to grade a record with a penetrating scratch that DOES sound, being honest, I seldom offer records that have them. Any other marks are fine and faint as seen under bright angled light, and still a very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with modestly usage I feel sure, but clearly, it has had one trauma in the past. Still a very respectable record, NOT for the purist or less tolerant with around 20 or so clicks on the third song. If this acceptable, the rest plays great and a scarce first pressed copy that many will more than happy with.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A very well pressed Charisma record that offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds registered little, but again I state, it has a smallish scratch on ‘It Brings a Tear’ with around 20 or so clicks, some moderate. Tracking is effortless with no pressing issues and all other songs do play immpressively, so clearly, not for the more sensitive listener, but if the clicks are acceptable, this is still a very nice first issue and pressed record.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
