Here we have another interesting audiophile vintage-vinyl LP, offered for sale by John Marks. Please look at my other auctions.

This and the other LPs I am putting up are some of the “picks of the litter” of an estate-sale collection of approximately 800 vinyl records, mostly 12-inch but with a few 10-inch, dating from the early or mid 1950s though the late 1980s. The audiophile/music lover/ornithologist collected deeply in a small number of esoteric fields (Sea Chanteys, Neapolitan songs, South American indigenous music), and widely in Early classical and sacred music and solo, chamber, and orchestral music, as well as audiophile-interest classical, jazz, folk, rock, and pop.

Up for sale is a used copy of Sheffield Lab's 1983 direct-cut (live to lacquer) LP of wind players (oboes, clarinets, horns, and bassoons) from the Chicago Symphony playing a program of woodwind music of Mozart and Greig. The music is by turns serious and lyrical.

Both LP and jacket are in reassuringly decent shape. The jacket has only minimal scuffing and no ring wear that I can see. The bottom right corner of the sleeve is bent, as shown. The original owner color-coded the jacket with a small yellow self-adhesive dot in the upper left corner. The LP is in nice basically clean shape with no visible scratches but with a few minor small white dust particles that I think are paper dust from the inner sleeve or the jacket. A nice item; perhaps it was played only a few times.

Who is the right buyer for this? The right buyer for this LP is someone who wants to experience a famous direct-cut LP recording, but who does not want to pay huge money for a Near Mint or Sealed copy. In other words, someone who knows how to clean an LP, who has extra new inner sleeves, and who wants the cheapest way possible to find out if the sound of this LP is something he or she likes so much that seeking out an even better copy makes economic sense (which it may not--this is a very nice copy).

The images are of the exact item offered for sale. I am evaluating these LPs visually, and am selling them as-is. These records were not stored in archival thick aftermarket plastic sleeves; a normal music lover took them out and played them. To restate: LPs from this estate sale are USED RECORDS, and not LPs that were bought as investments and never played. That said, the music lover in question did have a Well-Tempered Turntable and a decent phono cartridge, and a VPI record-washing machine.

My descriptions and starting prices and/or reserves are set in consideration of full disclosure and also practicality. I note any flaws I see. I no longer grade using Goldmine’s terms, because that can lead to a pointless meta-discussion. How can you call an LP jacket that is distorted from having been soaked with water “Very Good”?

I would prefer not to sell outside the US. If a foreign bidder wants the item, I regret that in view of past experiences, I can only sell it using the very expensive shipping from the US Post Office that comes with tracking and delivery confirmation.

I think that that just about covers it. The fine print: PayPal only; I do not go around behind eBay; and, in view of the totality of the circumstances, this sale will be final and so there will be no returns or refunds.
