Description

For sale is the hard-to-find Abbie Hoffman LP, "WAKE UP AMERICA! Abbie Hoffman Sings on His Friends, The Joint Chiefs of Staff".

This is the original release from 1971 on Big Toe Records (BIG TOE1). The artwork is by Peter Bramley, the first art director of the National Lampoon magazine, editor of humor magazines and creator of absurd underground comics.
This was released without approval by Hoffman as Tom Lopez, the studio director at ZBS Media, relates:
"Abbie Hoffman recorded a record in our studio here in the early 70s.  We even brought in a band for him to play with, and their name really was, “The Joint Chiefs of Staff.”  Abbie had a lot of fun.  He was here for a few days, recording in the studio, riding around on our lawn tractor, and entertaining us.
After he left, we assembled the record, and a few weeks later he came back to listen and make whatever changes.  But the day he arrived, he received a phone call saying Rolling Stone Magazine had just come out with an article blasting Abbie, claiming his latest book, “Steal This Book,” he had stolen from someone else!  Abbie was quite distraught.  He suddenly up and left back for NYC.  And in the confusion and misunderstanding that followed – this vinyl LP was released.
Abbie wasn’t happy about that (though we thought he had agreed).  But he liked us, so he asked that we stick a disclaimer on the back of each LP, and that’s what we did (it’s Abbie’s handwriting)."
Attached to the back of the jacket is the personal hand-written letter by Abbie explaining why you shouldn’t buy this record.  (The letter is the original copy attached to the back of each album).  In the letter, Abbie wrote, “Last summer me and some friends at ZBS Media drained a tank of nitrous oxide (which is a lot of giggles) and ended up jamming the whole day the result – this record.”
Amazing historical document of free-form political genius in the 1960s; the Marx Brothers of the psychedelic age.
Featuring Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Ron Krassner and all the other Yippies in a live Radio Show with music by The Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The sleeve is in very good+ condition with minor wear, and still has the note from Abbie Hoffman attached to the back of the sleeve!
The record looks VG due to several light sleeve scuffs, but plays very good+ with no issues to speak of.
I will pack this with care in a proper mailer with stiffeners to protect it in transit.
