Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and exceedingly rare 3LP box set from Philips (6703 076, Spanish pressing on medium-weight vinyl (not thin, floppy vinyl), red/silver labels, stereo, booklet included, catalog issue) features Salvatore Accardo's masterly set of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin BWV 1001-1006, warmy recorded at Doppsgezinde Kerk, Amsterdam, in January 1976 and still firmly among the very finest presentations of these works ever made.
Included then are the following works by Johann Sebastian Bach:
Sonata No. 1 for Solo Violin in G minor BWV 1001
Partita No. 1 for Solo Violin in B minor BWV 1002
Sonata No. 2 for Solo Violin in A minor BWV 1003
Partita No. 2 for Solo Violin in D minor BWV 1004
Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin in C Major BWV 1005
Partita No. 3 for Solo Violin in E Major BWV 1006
These are highly individual readings, broadly conceived, yet brought off with the same virtuoso command that is a hallmark of Accardo's powerful and silver-toned playing. One suspects that if this set were to enjoy renewed release on CD, and with production values worthy of the playing (i.e., not in Philips' dully conceived Duo series), it instantly win new admirers and regain its rightful place in surveys of great Sonata & Partita recordings.
The sound afforded Accardo is fine even by Philips' exalted analog standard, the violin well balanced and not overly spotlit, with great presence, but also warmth and space around the instrument, an audio fidelity that pays great dividends in the great Chaconne, which under Accardo's bow and fingers emerges as a towering, majestic, and moving creation.
Included is a full-size, 4-page booklet with extensive notes on the music by Bernard Jacobson – all texts provided in Spanish only.
Also included is a full-size 24-page color catalog showcasing other albums from the Philips catalog issued during 1977-78.
All-in-all, an extraodrinary traversal by one of today's great masters, a violinist's violinist.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is EXCELLENT. There is a slight bit of wear at the upper portion of the spine / left corner, but that is all. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the box remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a fine collector’s copy.
The condition of the 4-page full-size booklet is EXCELLENT. There is a minor crease to the front page, but that is all. The pages remain bright and crisp, free of markings, and the binding pefect.
The condition of the 3 LPs is near-MINT throughout and playback is outstanding. There are no spindle trails, scratches, tics, or other faults – overall, there rate as truly superb collector's copies.
