ANT BOX 2000 CAT 5007822003.

Description

ANTicipated for many many years by loyal Antpeople worldwide as well as by other 'interestees', the 'Antbox' -a socalled 'first ever definitive, career defining and long-awaited Adam & The Ants boxset'- finally sees it's release (BTW, a compilation video should be available seperately)!

All 66 songs on the boxset were handpicked by Adam Ant and his longtime songwriting partner/guitarist Marco Pirroni, and the 48-page booklet that comes with a cool 3CD deluxe 7" lid-top box includes amusing/interesting liner notes from the both of them, as well as a load of unseen stuff -like a cute baby Marco pic, for example! .... But let's not get 'too teenybopper' here.

Reviewing the song material (regular single and album songs, alternate versions, demos, and officially unreleased songs) on this boxset I make the distinction between 3 types of (potential) listener-target-groups. That sounds posh, doesn't it? Well anyway, don't let the first (most critical) bit withhold you from reading the complete review; please make up your mind about this 3CD-set after reading it ALL.

--From a die-hard-collector's point of view -i.e. mine- I say they could have done better with the song-selecting. Apart from the obvious already released stuff (on regular CDs, as well as on a bunch of compilation Ants CDs) the true fanatics have a biiiig chunk of the rarer song material already, and some of it, like a few of the demos, in better quality than the versions on this box set! And hey, that Stand & Deliver demo stands out as 'very bad' (in my spoilt book anyway) since it is a far cry from the sexy 'n' swashbuckling version that was released as a single in 1981. Unfortunately also Adam's unreleased 1993 Persuasion album, as well as for example his movie-soundtrack songs (What's Going On, Lamé and Out Of Bounds) are not included. Probably due to 'record labels legal hassle' and annoying stuff like that, but nevertheless it is a big loss for a supposed career-spanning-overview CD-set like this Antbox. On the other hand -and more importantly!- the newly available gems from the Ant-vaults, like Zydyco, High Heels in High Places, Fat Fun, the 'Manners and Physique' rock & roll version, I Win Zulus, the 'Los Rancheros' demo and two handsful-or-so more, DO make up for the above mentioned reservations. It also makes me wonder why some of this stuff wasn't released before; some of it has big hit potential, or would at least be a welcome addition on the regular albums OR earlier-mentioned compilations!

--If you are not one of typical 'collector fans' that tries to get his/her hands on each and every Ant(s) release/song/version/beep, then you are certainly gonna enjoy this collectable set because you will then probably only have about a third of the songs already -most likely the included 22 hitsingles- and maybe a few others. All the rest will be new to you, and a revelation in that for the most part.

--Have you never heard any Antmusic? Then this boxset will be a great introduction to it for you! If, and that is an obvious requirement of course, you will dig that special and hard to resist 'Antmusic-style'; Ant/AntMarco's catchy pop-songwriting, with it's clever lyrics (well, overall) and the very rich and exciting visual (!) sound. There is lots of drums, yodelesque vocals (No Tirol-style stuff, so no worries!) and multi-layered guitars -Pirroni is one hell of a guitarist- in most of the 80's songs they wrote. And then there is a blend of styles in the earlier and later Antmusic. Most of it is very unlike any other band's sound, which can come as quite a relieve in the often drabby unimaginative world of popmusic.

After listening to this CD-set I DO want more Antmusic For Sexpeople! Be it new stuff, be it an Antbox #2. If only/ever. Don't hold your breath though! :)
