In 1978, the roller coaster ride of Aerosmith's career was soon to go into a major dive -- within a year, Joe Perry would leave the band, they'd release their first truly disappointing album (Night in the Ruts), and their substance abuse issues would begin to seriously sap the strength of their live show. But no one knew that was in the cards when Aerosmith strode onto the stage at the Boston Music Hall for a special hometown show that was being broadcast live on WCBN-FM. That night, Aerosmith were still America's biggest rock band and they were not about to let their Boston fans down. Baying at the Moon: Classic 1978 Radio Broadcast has circulated for years as a bootleg, and with good reason -- it captures the band on a great night, with the guitar firepower of Joe Perry and Brad Whitford sounding razor-sharp, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer tirelessly pouring out the beat, and Steven Tyler delivering the attitude and high-pitched wail that made him one of rock's greatest frontmen in the '70s. The band is tight, firing on all cylinders with just the right amount of grit, and while the audio is a step or two down from ideal, the mix gets the fire of the performance just right, and the compression of the audio actually favors Aerosmith's arena-friendly sound at this point in their career. If Baying at the Moon has a flaw, it's the set list, which features a few too many lesser tunes from Draw the Line, then their most recent album; has there ever been an Aerosmith fan who really wanted to hear "Kings and Queens"? But if you want concrete proof that in the spring of 1978 Aerosmith still had the goods and then some, Baying at the Moon is the disc you need, a casually created document of the hand in high ass-kicking form; as Peter Buck once said, "If you grew up in the '70s, you liked Aerosmith," and this show proves those kids liked that band for a very good reason. ~ Mark Deming
