ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome and very rare LP from Remington (R·199·95, US pressing, black/gold label, mono) pairs two superlative Beethoven Violin Sonata performances, first released on LP in 1952.

 

The exact contents are as follows:

 

Helen Airoff, violin

Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 8 in G Major Op. 30 No. 3

> with Celiny Chailley-Richez, piano

 

Airoff worked with both Adolf Busch and Georges Enesco, whose wife – the fine pianist Celiny Chailley-Richez – accompanies her here. Airoff’s few commercial recordings deserve the widest currency. She was much admired by Menuhin and many others in the violin world.

 

Walter Schneiderhan, violin

Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Major Op. 12 No. 2

> with Erik Then-Bergh, piano

 

Although Walter never enjoyed the international prominence that his brother and fellow violinist Wolfgang did, he was nonetheless a very fine musician in his own right and one whose recordings remain worth hearing. Here, he is superbly accompanied by able German pianist Erik Then-Bergh.

 

Although Remington was never celebrated for the technical quality of its recordings, whether by accident or design, the peformance as heard here is as clear as a bell, bold and striking.

 

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

 

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight bumping/wear at corners, as well as some discoloration, and a small bit of writing to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

 

The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Visually, there are spindle trails and hairline surface marks to the vinyl. In terms of sound, although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, and there are a few moments of peak distortion (more so in the Schneiderhan) and a few tics (nothing repetitive), in general the playback is fine. Those requiring CD silent surfaces, are kindly advised to look elsewhere, however. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
