Description

Al Hirt & Ann-Margret . Beauty & the Beard . 1964 RCA Victor LP

In October, 1960, two obscure acts were booked into the Dunes Hotel lounge in Las Vegas. One was a beefy, bearded trumpeter from New Orleans named Al Hirt. The other, an undergraduate combo from Northwestern University, called iteself "The Suttle Tones" -- pianist, drummer, bass player, and a sweet, shapely sophomore who sang -- Ann-Margret Olson.

From that dual debut both Al Hirt and Ann-Margret (who shed her last name as well as the combo) went on to individual acclaim as RCA Victor recording stars. A little while ago they were back together again, not in a Las Vegas lounge but in RCA's Hollywood studio. There, joining talents in a two-night, eight hour session, they cut this delightful album.

Despite their disparate abilities, they went together as tastefully as gin and vermouth. While she sang, Al perched his 300 pounds on a high stool, benignly smiling encouragement at her over the end of his polished horn. And Ann-Margret cheered him through his rocketing solos with whispered urgings of, "Go, Big Daddy, go!"

This album offers a musical first too ... In it, Al Hirt sings! (liner notes)

SS

Still Sealed

9

NM

Near Mint records will look like new or almost-like-new, with at worst, a minor surface mark(s). (This is usually the TOP grade for an unsealed album)

8

VG+

Very Good Plus records will be nice and shiny with only minor surface marks which shouldn't affect the sound

7

VG

Very Good records will still be nice & shiny but have more pronounced scuffs/scratches which will likely be audible

-----------------------------------------------

6

G+

I don't list many items below VG ... but may do so if it's a desirable title ... so a Good Plus or Good may be acceptable if it's the only condition available ...

5

G

these two grades will include records with signs of wear, deeper scratches and pops/clicks during play ... still may be worth keeping until an upgrade is found ...
