Description
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Original Master Recording quality is obvious when you play this disc on any good Hi-Fi system ( the better the system, the more revealing of the artistry). The dynamic range and sheer technical quality of the record, combined with the material have resulted in a high point for phonographic records only exceeded by the MFSL UHQR.
The Super Vinyl used for the disc has no "memory" (ie. the walls of the record grooves go back to exactly where they started before the passage of the stylus) and MFSL encouraged owners of the disc to play them over and over without "rest" between plays. Ordinary pressings, made using soft vinyl, can require up to 24 hours "rest" between plays to allow the groove walls to return to shape after the passage of the stylus and MFSL stated that discs made from Super Vinyl would last 5-10 times longer than ordinary soft vinyl discs.
MFSL Reminder: We do not de-horn our metal parts for fear of wiping off high frequencies and transients. It may be necessary to play the disc several times, with your stylus acting as a polishing tool, to eliminate random pops and ticks. Brush carefully before and after each play.
Only the original stereo Master Tape is used for music source and it is played at half speed to provide the input signal to an Ortofon master disc cutting system. No limiting or compression of the audio signal is applied as it is fed to the cutting head amplifiers, hence there is no restriction of the dynamic range of the recording. The half speed disc cutting method allows the cutting stylus twice as much time to carve an accurate groove. Because the cutting head amplifiers have 600 Watts per channel available to them, yet half speed only requires one quarter of the power that is needed for real time or normal speed cutting, there is a significant amount of head room available. This means a far superior top end and overall frequency and transient response.
I was the original purchaser of this recording and have had this and other records now on sale on Ebay for nearly thirty years. This record has been played a maximum less than 5 times using an Ortofon MC-30 cartridge. The record was not played again after I recorded the record using an Ortofon MC-30 cartridge mounted in a Denon DA-307 tone arm on a Denon DP-3000 broadcast standard DD turntable using a DBX II 128 dynamic range enhancer onto Revox tape on a Revox B77 reel to reel. All of which I still have and use including an Accuphase E-303 amp and Tannoy Arden speakers.
This disc is amongst the best pressed disc ever made and it will never be re-issued or surpassed in quality.
If you have audiophile Hi-Fi equipment of any sort you need to have this record, just to hear what your equipment can do with the source material. The cover and record are in perfect condition. Buy the record for the music and quality of the recording, if you want the record for the quality of the cover then you shouldn't buy it.
If you want the best, than this is it and only a fraction of the cost of most good audiophile components. After all, what you hear is what induced you to spend money on Hi-Fi anyway.
I am selling my collection to spend more on Nikon gear, check out my other listings.
