Alex Harvey began his career as a hard-gigging R&B and soul singer in his native Glasgow during the “British blues boom” of the early 1960s in his native. Despite being very well-regarded as a life performer however he was relatively unsuccessful as a recording artist with none of his singles, or his 1964 album, “The Blues” on Polydor, making any impact on the record-buying public.

Alex continued fronting his own band throughout the sixties before suddenly emerging onto the national scene in late 1970s as the leader of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band with a series of fine albums, including “Framed” and “Next”. Alex’s work during this period is sometimes scene as belonging to the “Glam Rock” genre but in fact, his material was far more intense and challenging than that as anyone who saw the band’s on-stage theatrics would testify. At times, the band’s shows seemed nearer to performance art than anything else.

For a brief period around 1967, between his R&B years and his major national success, Alex flirted with psychedelic rock, teaming up with the band Giant Moth, to release a couple of singles, a cover of the Incredible String Band song, Maybe Some Day b/w Curtains For My Baby (St. James Infirmary) and The Sunday Song b/w Horizons. Needless to say, nobody bought either of these singles and copies of both are now incredibly rare (the asking price for the only copy of Maybe Some Day on Discogs is £175.00).

If copies of Maybe Some Day on record are rare, then this original record shop poster promoting the release must be vanishingly so. This large, two colour, screen-printed poster was produced for Decca by Big O Posters. Big O, founded by Martin Sharp and David Ledeboer, was perhaps the best known of the British psychedelic poster companies that sprang up following the explosion of psychedelic poster design on the West Coast of the USA in the mid-sixties. As well as producing posters designed by Martin Sharp himself, the company also commissioned work from other well known counter-culture artists of the period including Ivan Ripley, David Vaughan and Roger Dean.

This original example of the poster is in fine, clean, unfaded, undamaged condition. It looks never to have been used until I blu-tacked to the wall to take the photos for this listing. The poster measures 23 inches by 30 inches (55 x 76 cms approx).
