Andy Warhol designed record sleeve for one of Blue Note records earliest releases in the LP format, a recording of jazz saxophonist Johnny Griffin entitled 'The Congregation.' Warhol was a well known and successful commercial artist creating illustrations and artwork for advertisements, magazine layouts, etc prior to being recognized as a fine artist. The work from this period, in his so-called "pre-Pop" style was ignored for many years before being recognized as a legitimate and important part of his large body of work. Warhol always favored the record sleeve as an outlet for his artwork--his first record sleeve dates to 1949--and he continued to design records throughout his career (most famously for Velvet Underground and for the Rolling Stones) even after he had become one of the world's most successful and recognized artists. Some of Warhol's most successful record designs were produced in collaboration with Blue Note's legendary art director Reid Miles, who oversaw Blue Note's design department in an era when the label was creating some of the most iconic jazz record covers of the bebop era (to go along with some of the best known jazz recordings in history). This vintage LP is a beautiful example of Warhol's graphic art. There is a bit of damp-staining to the sleeve, but a very presentable copy nonetheless; the record itself is unscratched and plays perfectly. NO RESERVE.
