Andy Warhol designed record sleeve for Prestige Records release in very unusual 16 RPM format. Relatively few of these records were produced, only about 2,000 pressed, due to the unusual 16 RPM format, and for this reason it is one of the scarcest Warhol-designed records to find. Warhol was well known and successful commercial artist creating illustrations and artwork for advertisements, magazine layouts, etc prior to being recognized as a fine artist. The work from this period, in his so-called "pre-Pop" style was ignored for many years before being recognized as a legitimate and important part of his large body of work. Warhol always favored the record sleeve as an outlet for his artwork--his first record sleeve dates to 1949--and he continued to design records throughout his career (most famously for Velvet Underground and for the Rolling Stones) even after he had become one of the world's most successful and recognized artists. Some of Warhol's most successful record designs were produced in collaboration with legendary art director Reid Miles (who is most famous for his work at Blue Note, but is here working for Prestige Records). This vintage LP is a beautifully preserved example of Warhol's graphic art. The sleeve shows just a bit of age darkening at edges and on reverse side; the record itself is unscratched, I'm almost certain it will play flawlessly but I don't have a turntable that plays 16RPM so I wasn't able to test it.
