Description:
Original 1971 UK first pressing of Anne Briggs’ legendary self-titled debut on Topic Records (12T207) — the album that gave the world “Blackwater Side,” later reworked by Bert Jansch and a key influence on Jimmy Page’s “Black Mountain Side.” One of the most sought-after British folk LPs of its era.
Confirmed original pressing via runout matrix (407-A-1A / 407-B-1A) — not a later reissue.
In my collection since 2002, played no more than three times total in 25 years. Professionally cleaned by the staff at Rat Records, Camberwell, on their machine (Keith Monks, I think) in 2018, and only test-played once since.
Vinyl (Visual Grading: EX ):
Genuinely deep, glossy sheen across the whole surface — no dulling, haze, or the “spiderweb” scuffing you’d see on a heavily-played copy. A few very faint hairline marks are visible under raking light, which is normal even on lightly-played vinyl and doesn’t affect play. A couple of faint spindle marks are present right around the centre hole, but the label itself is clean and unmarked. Sonically: surface noise typical for a folk pressing of this vintage, with some noticeable pops and crackles including on track one, where it’s most noticeable to my ears.
Labels:
Both labels are the correct purple Topic design for this release, clearly reading “First Published by Topic 1971,” catalogue 12T.207, with “All Rights Reserved” and the Topic address on a single line (one of two known label variants of this pressing). No writing, stickers, tears, or discolouration — paper is bright and clean.
Sleeve (VG+ / EX-):
Good, even gloss retention on the front laminate with no heavy scuffing or fading. Ring marking visible as per photos. A faint ring impression is visible from the disc pressing against the sleeve over time (normal for an unlined inner sleeve) on the cream coloured front, ring marking more noticeable in brown rear of sleeve. A small crease/soft dent is present at the top edge of the back sleeve, along with general edge softening consistent with age. No tears, no writing, no split seams.
Sold as seen from the photos — please review closely before bidding, as this reflects true, honest condition of a genuinely rare pressing. No returns accepted; any questions welcome before you bid. Happy to provide further photos.
Tracked international shipping to EU, US, Japan, and South Korea.
