Annette: Annette's Beach Party LP 1963 Buena Vista BV 3316 -- Cover VG++ Vinyl VG++
In 1963, Beach Party, the first official "beach party" movie, was released and became a box-office smash. It starred the most popular beach party couple: Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. (Oddly, Frankie always played a character named "Frankie," but Annette was inevitable dubbed either "Didi" or "Dolores.") Frankie was already well into his twenties when the film was made, but played a "teen" for the next several years. Annette was fresh from her days as a Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club with Walt Disney and became the epitome of the sweet, wholesome beach girl. According to Annette, old Walt was severely against her even donning a bikini, as he thought it would tarnish her image, as well as Disney's. (I can't neglect to point out the fact that Annette's bikini is hardly "skimpy;" it is hilariously big and full, almost a one-piece swimsuit with an inch or two sliced out of the middle.)
Nonetheless, the fact is that Annette, more than any other single figure, made the bikini acceptable and popular with American women and untold women and girls all over the world. From its introduction in 1946 to when Annette began donning bikinis in the beach party movies, bikini sales in America actually rose an incredible 3000 percent. The films also helped generate a huge spike in the mid-'60s in the sale of surfboards to guys.
Annette: Annette Muscle Beach Party LP33 MONO 12 tracks Buena Vista 3314 -- Cover VG++ Vinyl VG++This album is Annette singing songs from the movie Muscle Beach Party plus the song, The Scrambled Egghead from Merlin Jones. This album was released in 1964. Beach Party was followed quickly by three more beach party films in 1964: Muscle Beach Party, Pajama Party. The first two were pretty much just more formula films starring Frankie and Annette. The main claim to fame for Muscle Beach Party is that it was the official big screen debut of "little" Stevie Wonder. The beach party films became showcases for other music legends, too, such as the Beach Boys, Little Richard, the Animals, and the Supremes.
Shirelles: Sing their songs from Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World Scepter 514 -- Cover VG++ Vinyl VG++
The Shirelles were invited to cut a song (‘31 Flavors’) for the film It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Excepting a few teen idols, no rock-oriented act had ever been tapped by Hollywood for such a major feature. With a superstar cast headed by Spencer Tracy, this was no beach party or Alan Freed teen potboiler. The accompanying LP makes its CD debut here and a fascinating artifact it is: a hodgepodge of vault tracks; a couple of new items by Scepter’s latest A&R hand Ed Townsend; and three tunes written by the film’s composers. The title track offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear our Jersey girls warble in French (Doris), Italian, (Micki), Japanese (Beverly), Spanish and German (Shirley). After attending the Hollywood premiere, the group hit Europe for a stint at the Paris Olympia and a UK tour, capping another stellar year.
RECORDS ARE GRADED CONSERVATIVELY see photos M: Mint - Still sealed, assume vinyl is perfect.
NM: Near Mint - Cover has no creases, folds, seam splits or similar defects. Vinyl, still shiny, as if opened for the first time. No writing or stickers on the vinyl. No obvious scratches. Label: No writing or stickers and no fading of the label.
VG++: Very Good Plus Plus - Cover: No ink wear, minor creases to corners, no seam tears. Vinyl can have scratches, but not felt by your fingers. Sound quality must be near mint. No more than 15% of the surface should have wear or scuffs on it.
VG+: Very Good Plus - Cover might have light creasing or minor seam or corner wear, but still in great condition to show off.
Vinyl label on record may be a sticker or writing, but it shows very little wear. There may be only a couple light surface scratches on the grooves, but do not affect the playback with noise or skips. You may only see these scratches if you put them under a bright light and really look for them.
VG: Very Good - Cover may have obvious ringwear in the middle or around the perimeter of where the record was, maybe some side seam splits, or little tears at the top or side where the record goes back into. Vinyl may not be that shiny anymore and you will see scratches without putting it under a bright light, but they still would not affect the quality of the playback. The sound quality is still pretty good, maybe a little noise, but not enough to detract from the listening experience. The label might have some fading around it, besides having stickers or writing.
