ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP from Decca (SXL 6204, English pressing, FFSS black/silver WB “Made in England” label, stereo) features Ernest Ansermet and L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande's extraordinarily evocative account of the complete score to Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe, taped in the fabled acoustics of Victoria Hall, Geneva in May 1964 – truly a gramophone classic.
This richly colored performance also features the Chorus of Radio Romande, Lausanne (Andre Charlet, Chorus Master). Ansermet knew the composer and with those of Charles Munch and Pierre Monteux, this Daphnis et Chloe remains among the great accounts of this work from the 'Golden Age of Stereo', with a shimmering, diaphanous power and beauty – simply and truly stunning, with demonstration quality stereo sound to match.
Incidentally, the striking cover art reproduces a photo taken of a Covent Garden production of Daphnis et Chloe.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight bumping/wear at corners, minor creasing, and discoloration and a sticker to the rear panel. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, or owners' markings, and the album remains extremely solid bright and glossy, the laminate finish very much intact – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are spindle trails and light marks to the vinyl. In terms of sound, although the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is superb. If you require a flawless or near-MINT copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector’s copy.
