Description

I have been listing some rare NY & West Coast jazz LP's from the personal collection of Tom Dowd whom i knew and worked w at Atlantic Records in the early 70's when he was the in house producer for Atlantic at Criteria Records in Miami. I handled all the radio promotion for the label then out of the Criteria offices. (Atlantic South)..   Wonderful gig w Jerry Wexler taking residence in Miami back then. I stayed in touch w Tom over the years and a few years before his passing he would frequent my retail store in Miami (Blue Note Records)(See Below) on a regular basis looking for records and recollections.   As a result he sold me a number of his personal records acetates 10" etc. in 2000. I kept a number of rarity's and have decided to sell off a few extras. He worked as an indi engineer for a number of labels before joining Atlantic (Bethlehem~Decca) Chris Connor and JJ Johnson, so there will be a number of labels other than Atlantic that i will list as Tom was on everyone's mailing list back then and most are 1st press and sample copies.   I also collaborated w director Mark Moorman on the award winning documentary (2003) about Tom's life "Tom Dowd and the language of Music" supplying all the still photos of records he engineered from Big Joe Turner thru the Rascals and Ornette Coleman w grateful acknowledgement at the end of the film.   I have already listed a number of records from his library as a set sale. Most are WLP of the records he personally engineered so please check them out.

Up next is: Incredibly rare LP by multi instrumentalist Anthony Ortega "A man and his horns" from 1956 on the rare doo wop Herald label 101 (Their 1st).Features Art Farmer Hank Jones and Ed Thigpen. Beautiful copy DG Flat Edge and RVG in the dead wax on both sides. One of the 1st multi trac recordings w Ortega playing flute, tenor, clari, bass clari and bari.Has a great latin feel...

LP is in EX+  w blinding lustre and wear free labels. Plays excellent. There are some very light dimples in the wax which was typical of the Herald label back then. Jacket is in EX condition. No c/c drill holes or sawcuts. Superb spine seams and corners. Light foxing on rear.D.J. stamped on rear, a true 1st first. You can't get better.

The last photo is Tom Dowd with legendary Miami record impresario Henry Stone who distributed Atlantic out of Tone Distributors in Hialeah where i got my start in 1968. Photo taken at my record shop in Miami (Blue Note) in 2000
