Soprano EUGENIA BURZIO  , Baritono Antonio Magini-Coletti , with Piano Accompaniament

Superb Quality Duet of 2 giants of Bel canto , one of the rarest discs of these 2 great Vocals

Antonio Magini-Coletti (17 February 1855 - 21 July 1912) was a leading Italian baritone who had a prolific career in Europe and the United States during the late 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. A versatile artist, he appeared in several opera world premieres but was particularly associated with the works of Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner and the verismo composers. He was also an accomplished exponent of the bel canto repertoire.
Magini-Coletti is one of the earliest Italian-born singers whose voice can still be heard. He made numerous 78-rpm discs of operatic arias, duets and ensembles in Milan for the Zonophone label (in 1902/1903) and for Fonotipia Records (1905–1910). He recorded, too, for the Columbia Graphophone Company. Twenty-two of his Fonotipia recordings have been reissued on CD by Preiser (catalogue number 89518).[1] They show that he possessed a big, vibrant, dark-hued voice of outstanding quality. His breath control was exemplary and he could execute florid music by Rossini or Donizetti with flair and agility due to the thorough technical grounding that he had acquired from Persichini. His Verdi singing also impresses but, oddly enough, he did not record anything from his Wagnerian repertoire.

Eugenia Burzio (20 June 1872, Poirino - 18 May 1922, Milan)
Burzio was an Italian operatic soprano known for her vibrant voice and passionate style of singing. She was particularly prominent in the verismo repertoire and created the role of Delia Terzaghi in Leoncavallo's Goffredo Mameli as well as singing Minnie in the Italian premiere of Puccini's La fanciulla del West. While many music critics found her interpretations imaginative and exciting, others criticized her for unevenness and over-emphasis in the vocal lines. Burzio began her music career as a violinist in her early twenties but ultimately decided to pursue an opera career. She studied singing at the Milan Conservatory with Carolina Ferni and made her professional début as Santuzza in Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana at the Teatro Regio di Torino in 1899. She went on to have a highly successful career and was for many years one of the leading dramatic sopranos in Italy. She became particularly associated with the music of the new verismo school. She was a regular performer at La Scala during the first two decades of the twentieth century where her roles included Gluck’s Armide and Bellini’s Norma among many others. In addition to appearing in operas throughout Italy, Burzio also appeared in several productions in South America and in St Petersburg. Towards the end of her career Burzio suffered from nerves and ill-health. She made her final appearance in 1919 in Ponchielli’s Marion Delorme.
