Description
redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful 5-LP box set – an unplayed, immaculate collector’s copy – from Philips (PHM 5-570, US pressing, black label, mono, full-size booklet included) features pianist Claudio Arrau’s magisterial traversal of Beethoven’s 5 Piano Concertos, recorded with conductor Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, in the Grote Zaal of the Concertgebouw in June 1964, a landmark in the Beethoven discography – simply wonderful!
Please note: This is a mono copy, not stereo. However, so fine is the Philips' engineering that one hardly registeres the difference.
The exact contents are as follows, all works by Ludwig van Beethoven:
Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major Op. 15
Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major Op. 19
Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor Op. 37
Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major Op. 58
Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major Op. 73 “Emperor”
Few pianists have played these works with such technical assurance and penetrating insight, Arrau’s beautifully burnished tone, Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw providing echt accompaniment and Philips affording the entire enterprise warm, glowing, and detailed sound.
Included is a handsome full-size, 16-page booklet with appreciations of both artists, as well as extensive notes on the music by Bernard Jacobson (all texts in English only) and numerous archival photos, including one from the actual recording sessions – fascinating all.
PLEASE NOTE:
Even with minimal packaging this set will weigh just over 1 kg. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $40 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $43 USD.
Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else.
Anyway, all this to say that those who feel the price is high need to take the cost of shipping into account, so please keep this in mind when making a “best offer”. If you have any questions or doubts, feel free to write and I will be happy to help. Thank you.
