Where to begin with this incredible record?
Arthur Lipsett was an enigmatic, groundbreaking filmmaker who was admired by both Stanley Kubrick and George Lucas, so much so that his seminal "21-87" film is referenced in Star Wars (look it up on Google - mental stuff).
He did work for the National Film Board of Canada and eventually developed a plunderphonic cut-and-paste style that would gain him notoriety and reverence from filmmakers and artists worldwide.
A quick scan on the internet tells you just how weighty Lipsett's legacy has been, and following his tragic suicide in 1986 his reputation has soared.
This incredible record opens up a whole new dimension to Lipsett's work, reproducing the full audio recordings for some of his key films to vinyl and in the process delivering an audio document that's one of the most absorbing, inspired, disturbing and in places completely nuts albums we've ever laid our hands on. Splicing an utterly brilliant arrangement of interviews (Marshall MacLuhan, religious loons, Newsreel announcers, TV scientists, politicians) with found sounds, musical excerpts, tape loops and field recordings, the result is truly unlike anything you'll have heard before. What's so interesting is just how perfectly these montages work in this format, imbuing the record with an almost endlessly shifting character that is both intensely involving and fascinating to play around with. Of course, for many people this album will serve as an almost endlessly fruitful Tool, but regardless of how you choose to play it, we reckon "Soundtracks" will without doubt be the most original and thought provoking record you'll hear for quite some time.
